BROWNE, COCKE, and HOLLAND, of Shropshire and Virginia, a proposed relationship

In any attempt to make sense of relationships between families of early Virginia settlers, it is important to understand their social norms – families had interm. in England for centuries and lived next to each other – norms that were repeated in Virginia. So, when considering the origins of John Browne, whose widow m. Richard Cocke, a reasonable hypothesis is that they knew each other in England, and would have had a number of ‘familial interconnections’, with the greater that number, the more likely the validity of the proposed relationship, and the less likely the occurrence of happenchance. John Brown’s ‘origins’ cannot be known with any certainty, yet, in the following notice, a suggestion is made, which may, to some, seem reasonable. He had, if him, connections to the Cocke, Harris, Hill, Holland, Kettelby, and Smalman families, and they with each other, thus, the criteria of the social norm which framed relationships at this time is more than adequately met.

Mary Baugh*, half- br. of Thomas Cocke, a son by Richard Cocke’s second wife, and “friend” of Major William Harris. It is possible that John Browne had issue by a previous wife. If him, as assumed, he had a nephew and namesake.
1.1.4.1. John Browne, m. Sarah …, who m. (2) John Woodson, the br. of *Robert Woodson (whose dau., Elizabeth, m. William Lewis, of familial connection to Major William Harris, see hereinafter), a patentee of 450 ac., with William Harris (son of Major William Harris), etc., on “White Oak Swamp”. Rec. 1.1.5. Alice Browne, m. Richard Price (bapt. Sept. 21, 1587, son of John Price), on Nov. 17, 1619; possibly related to John Price of this account.

John Price and Richard Cocke of Henrico would have known each other very well. They were both of Shropshire, and a number of the various branches of the Cocke family resided in Ludlow, and were, with the families of Harris and Price, parishioners of the Church of St Lawrence, the registers of which record the baptism of John Price: “Nov. 10, 1584: John, s. William Preece”: Muster of the inhabitants of the Corporation of Charles City, Feb. 24, 1624. Muster of John Price: John aged 40, ship Starr in May, 1620. Ann his wife aged 21, ship Francis Bonaventure in August, 1620. Mary, a child, 3 months’ (Hottens Original List, p. 203). Two years later, in 1626, John Price owned 100 ac. at or near the falls of James river. (Virginia Historical Magazine, ed. William G. Stanard, No. 15, p. 363). May 23, 1638. Patent granted Matthew Price as son and heir of John Price for 150 ac. on Turkey Island Creek in Henrico Co. ‘granted by patent to his late father John Price, now in possession of his mother, Ann Hallom, Widow – being due unto him in right of his father who had a patent granted Feb. 20, 1619’ (B. 1, p. 558). John Price m. (1) Elizabeth Matthews: ‘1613 May 30: John Prees & Elizabeth Matthews, widow‘; (2) Anne …, who m. (2) Robert Hallom. On May 6, 1638, a patent was issued to Anne Hallom, widow, and the heirs of Robert Hallom, dec’d for 1000 ac. in Henrico. Northeast by the woods, southwest by the river, northwest by Bremo & land of Mr. Richard Cocke, & southeast toward Turkey Island Creek adj. land of John Price. (See Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623-1643 (v.1 & 2), p. 413). Turkey Island became the plantation of William Randolph, “friend” of Major William Harris. Thomas Lewis*, aged 23 in 1623, step-brother of John Harris*, b. 1604 (father of Major William Harris), is most likely recorded here: Hannah Boyse, dau. and heir of Luke Boyse, late of Henrico, decd., patented in Nov., 1635, 300 ac. in Henrico adjoining land of her mother Alice Edlowe; due 50 ac. for her personal adventure and 50 ac. for the personal adventure of her father, and 200 ac. for transportation of servants, viz.: ‘Thomas Lewis*, Robert Hollum, Joseph Royall*, Edward Holland, and Oliver Allen’ (Virginia Magazine, v., p. 97).

Robert Adams, and Sarah Lewis, who m. James Cocke, son of James Cocke and Elizabeth Pleasants.
1. Katherine Banks, m. (2) Captain Henry Isham Sr.
1.1. Mary Isham, m. William Randolph, to again repeat, named as a friend in the Will of Major William Harris.

LANGFORD AND HARRIS

1. Thomas Langford, gent., b. ca. 1535, bur. April 1, 1610, in Ludlow.
1.1. Thomas Langford.
1.1.1. William Langford, m. Jane Jordan, of Stone Acton, Shropshire.
1.1.1.1. Thomas Langford, of New Kent Co., who appears in this land grant: ‘Robinson, John. September 22, 1682. New Kent Co., granted 1,252 ac. on the Dragon Swamp and branches thereof.
1.1.1.1.1. Thomas Langford.
1.1.1.1.1.1. “Thomas Langford, orphan”.
1.2. Jane Langford, bapt. Oct. 10, 1567, m. Rowland Harris, Sept. 14, 1595.
1.2.1. Thomas Harris, bapt. Sept. 4, 1603, Ludlow), removed to Virginia, ca. 1650, having land on Curles Swamp, m. Alice, dau. of Evan Lewis, bapt. Nov. 20, 1603. Harries v Heath. Plaintiffs: Thomas Harries an infant, by his guardian and Edward Lewis. Defendants: Richard Heath and Edward Powis. Subject: messuage in Ludlow. (C 2/JasI/H5/38). This Thomas Harris was almost certainly the stepfather of his niece and nephew, Mary and William Harris.
1.2.2. John Harris, bapt. March 5, 1604, m. Margaret Holland.
1.2.2.1. Mary Harris, bapt. April 3, 1625, in Ludlow. In 1689, Mary (Harris) Ligon gave a deposition stating her age to be 64. “John Woodson*, Sr. of Henrico Co. to Edward Lester, land next to Richard Cocke, next to land formerly William Harris’s* on Curles Swamp. *Br. of Robert, supra.
1.2.2.2. Major William Harris, bapt. Jan. 13, 1627, in Ludlow. On June 22, 1663, he acquired 450 ac. in Henrico Co., on the N. side of the James River, to a 4 mile creek, called by name “the Slashes”, E. upon the “Malverne Hills” plantation of Richard Cocke, p. 304.
1.1.2.6.2.2.1. *William Harris (b. ca. 1675), was involved in the determination of the lands of Thomas Langford, “orphan”, on Feb. 26, 1731. (Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, vol. 36, no. 3, pp. 214-215), descended from his great-grandmother’s brother.

Jane Langford m. (2) Edward Lewis, gent (bur. June 12, 1632, in Ludlow), who was the father by a first wife (Anna, dau. of Thomas Blashfield) of *Thomas Lewis, b. 1600, heretofore mentioned. Given the strong connections of Edward Lewis to Ludlow (married and buried there; his two sons by Jane Langford (Edward and William) bapt. there; the latter m. there, Joan Blashfield, Nov. 26, 1645), the simplest connection of his family to the Woodsons of Virginia is the suggestion that his son, Thomas, was he who m. Margaret Pearce/Pierce, on July 1, 1633, in Ludlow, and that they were the parents of John Lewis, who m. Margerie …, who had issue a William Lewis, who m. Elizabeth, dau. of Robert Woodson, Sr. of Henrico Co., a patentee of 450 ac., with William Harris (son of Major William Harris), etc., on “White Oak Swamp”, as given. William Lewis and Elizabeth Woodson had issue: Mourning Lewis (b. ca. 1692), who m. Robert Adams, on Feb. 4, 1712, in Henrico Co. That is, it may be safer to assume this scenario, supposed on an incomplete St. Lawrence register, rather than one based on a recorded William Lewis of another register.

1.1. Jacosa Smalman, m. Thomas Adams.
1.2. Francis Smalman, m. Elizabeth Hopton.

John Cocke Jr. was, to repeat, the half-br. of Thomas Cocke, named as a “friend” in the Will of Major William Harris.
